The Results Are In

I hope everyone can stand one more medical related post. I hope it's the last one for a very long time!

Toby's UA and Culture were sent to a professional lab. The results - he has a small bit of blood in his urine, caused by sterile cystitis. The bladder lining or uretha gets irritated and bleeds a bit. He unquestionably had a UTI last fall, but this time, perhaps not.

They are both now on Hill's CD food and will be for life. The vet believes this will help a great deal with the cystitis. The anal gland issue may well be related. If so, that should clear up in time.

So from now on, we just watch and wait and evaluate symptoms, if any.  When irritation and blood strike we will probably do Prednisone.

What caused the sterile cystitis? Stress could have. What MY cats have to be stressed about, I have no idea. I do my best to provide them with a happy, comfortable lifestyle. Maybe he's picking it up from me; I tend to be anxious. Or maybe Leia is making him unhappy with her recently evolved Gurrl Power.

Anyway, I will do what I can to increase their comfort level. Maybe add some Feliway plug ins? A cat masseuse? I believe we have one or two feline experts in that area in the CB. Purrhaps we could hire them? Apply within!

We want to thank all of our furriends and their families who have expressed concern for Toby's medical issues. It's good to have people to share these things with, who also understand what we went through.

  1. We're glad there wasn't any bacteria, that's great news. Brian (Brian's Home) has ongoing cystitis issues and while UTI-Free has been an absolute godsend for Derry and his cystitis, it doesn't seem to have the same effect with Brian. Worth a try, though, if Toby continues to have issues and you don't want to do Pred.

  5. We're glad for this update on Toby's condition. We hope everything clears up with the new food. (In fact, my mom's original cat 99 years ago had no more UTI issues once she started with SD (regular); her issues were thought to be caused by the high ash content in other dry foods.) As for stress, who knows. Caroline is the nervous wreck in our family but we just deal with it. After all, BOYS RULE. ;-)

  6. Well, that's good news for Toby. If you think that stress may be causing this, you could definitely try using one or two feliway plugins around the house.

  7. We're happy to hear that Toby is doing better. Purrs and prayers that this good trend continues. We agree -- if it's stress-related, maybe some Feliway would help?

    Hugs!

  8. I am so grateful that Toby is better and I hope the Vet has access to the Veterinary Information Network to research any other possibilities.

  9. Poor Toby. I heard cats can easily pick up on human's emotions and feel as anxcious as us as a result. Feliway will certainly help as well.
